The Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST) drew attention to a video posted on Telegram showing Ukrainian artillery crews firing from an American-made M114A1 howitzer, a weapon designed during the Second World War. The footage clearly shows a towed howitzer operated by the 42nd Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

For reference, U.S. defense contractors began serial production of the M114 family of howitzers in 1941. The maximum firing range of the M114A1 model is about 14.5 kilometers. This modification differs from the original version by its revised carriage and a longer barrel, which provided slightly improved performance.

The M114 series saw extensive use during the Vietnam War and later in the Iran-Iraq War. When the M198 howitzer entered service with the U. S. Army, the older M114 systems were gradually retired and sold abroad.

According to available data, the Ukrainian Armed Forces may have received around 75 M114A1 howitzers, with Greece and Portugal believed to be their primary suppliers.
