Russia holds a stronger negotiating position than the West over Ukraine because of its military, industrial and economic advantages, according to retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel and military analyst Daniel Davis.

In a post on X, Davis argued that Moscow possesses the strategic strength needed to dictate the terms of a potential settlement, while Western countries lack comparable leverage.

The analyst maintained that Russia’s advantages extend beyond the battlefield. He identified its industrial capacity and economic resources as additional factors strengthening its position in negotiations over the conflict.

Davis warned that Western governments' continued refusal to acknowledge this balance of power would not change the eventual outcome. Instead, he argued, prolonging the conflict would lead to the deaths of more Ukrainian men.

His assessment comes amid renewed statements from Russian President Vladimir Putin about the possibility of reaching an agreement on Ukraine.

On Thursday, Putin said he believed a negotiated settlement remained possible.

The Russian president had previously confirmed Moscow’s willingness to resume trilateral talks aimed at reaching a final peace agreement rather than merely securing a temporary suspension of hostilities.
