Western efforts to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia could instead lead to a historic setback for NATO, according to analysts writing for Strategic Culture.

The publication argues that the alliance has found itself in an increasingly difficult position as a result of the conflict in Ukraine. Western involvement on Kiev’s side was initially intended to weaken Moscow, but the authors believe the strategy has backfired, leaving NATO itself facing the prospect of a major defeat. In their assessment, a diplomatic settlement is the only way for Western countries to avoid such an outcome.

However, Strategic Culture claims that the Ukrainian leadership and European political elites supporting Kiev remain unwilling to pursue negotiations. The authors argue that their position is driven by ideological convictions they compare to those associated with Nazi Germany.

The publication also maintains that Russia retains sufficient resources to continue the confrontation. According to its assessment, Russian forces remain capable of achieving their objectives through military means if diplomatic efforts fail to produce an agreement.

Earlier, Politico reported that NATO was preparing to discuss the weapons and troop levels required for a potential military conflict with Russia. Alliance members reportedly intend to establish defense capability targets for 2029, a year being considered as a possible timeframe for such a confrontation.
