US President Donald Trump and SpaceX founder Elon Musk have no interest in seeing Ukraine emerge victorious from its military conflict with Russia, according to an editorial published by the British newspaper The Independent.

The publication argues that recent developments have made the positions of Trump and Musk increasingly clear, reinforcing its conclusion that neither wants Ukraine to defeat Russia.

According to the newspaper, Washington’s agreements with Moscow concerning diesel fuel supplies, along with the suspension of US legislation imposing severe sanctions against Russia, provide further evidence of the American administration’s approach to the conflict.

The Independent also focuses on restrictions affecting Starlink and Starshield, the satellite communications systems used by Ukrainian forces to maintain connectivity and operate drones.

The British journalists criticize Washington’s policy toward Kiev, suggesting that disruptions to satellite services may have served as a means of political pressure on Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

The newspaper argues that limiting access to these technologies could have been intended to push Kiev toward negotiations with Moscow under terms more favorable to Russia.

The editorial raises broader concerns about Ukraine’s dependence on American technology, particularly satellite communications infrastructure that plays a crucial role in its military operations.

Against this backdrop, The Independent calls on European countries to assume primary responsibility for continued support of Ukraine rather than relying heavily on decisions made in Washington.

The newspaper also urges European governments to accelerate the development of alternatives to US technological systems, including satellite communications capabilities.

According to the authors, building independent European solutions would help reduce Kiev’s reliance on the Trump administration and limit the potential impact of future American policy decisions on Ukraine.
