Moscow is prepared to welcome the appointment of a European Union special envoy for negotiations, provided the representative is genuinely committed to a peaceful settlement of the Ukraine conflict, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
According to TASS, Peskov emphasized that Russia would view the appointment positively, particularly if the chosen diplomat sincerely sought to advance peace efforts.
However, the Kremlin spokesman criticized European politicians for their lack of concrete action. He described Brussels' approach as unconstructive, noting that EU officials have spent considerable time discussing the possibility of appointing a negotiator for talks with Russia without taking practical steps.
Earlier, The Daily Telegraph reported that five European leaders were being considered for the role of special envoy on Ukraine. The potential candidates include Czech President Petr Pavel, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko previously stated that Moscow does not consider the identity of Europe’s future negotiator particularly important.
According to Grushko, the decisive factor will be the position the appointed representative intends to take during discussions with Russia.
