The US-made AGM-188A Rusty Dagger, a low-cost cruise missile developed on an accelerated schedule for the Ukrainian military, has been adapted for launch from mobile ground-based platforms, according to The War Zone (TWZ).
Originally designed to be deployed from F-16 fighter jets, the missile has undergone modifications that allow it to operate without an aircraft. The upgraded version features a solid-fuel booster, enabling launches from concealed wheeled platforms.
According to TWZ, the Rusty Dagger is powered by a turbojet engine and has a range exceeding 400 kilometers. Its warhead now weighs more than 200 kilograms, making the missile suitable for striking fortified targets deep within enemy defensive positions.
The weapon is being developed under the US Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM) program, launched in 2024. Zone 5 Technologies is among the program’s principal contractors.
The ground-launch capability expands the missile’s deployment options beyond its originally intended use aboard F-16 fighters.
Under previously announced plans, Ukraine was scheduled to begin receiving its first batch of 840 missiles in October 2026.
A related budget request called for more than $650 million to purchase 3,010 missiles for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
However, it remains unclear whether the planned deliveries have actually begun or whether the commitments outlined in the procurement plans have been fulfilled.
