Ukrainian military helicopters are using the American Starlink satellite communications system, while tactical aircraft may also be connected to the network, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yury Ignat has revealed.

Ignat indicated that Ukrainian aircraft either already use Starlink or could begin using it, but declined to disclose further details.

According to the spokesman, the system is particularly valuable for tactical aviation because it provides reliable communications and access to satellite internet.

Ignat directly confirmed that Ukrainian helicopter crews use Starlink during operations. The satellite network helps pilots navigate toward targets and maintain contact with combat-control officers on the ground.

He explained that helicopter crews also rely on targeting cameras, visual observation and other equipment. However, Starlink remains an important part of their communications capabilities.

The spokesman also raised concerns about possible restrictions on the satellite service. With Ukrainian military helicopters flying at speeds of 300–350 km/h, he warned that a limitation based on the previously announced speed threshold could create serious operational difficulties if introduced.

On October 24, SpaceX chief Elon Musk accused Ukrainian forces of violating Starlink’s usage rules. He maintained that the civilian commercial service had never been authorized for offensive drone strikes.

Musk also drew a distinction between Starlink and Starshield, emphasizing that the latter operates under US government control.

The following day, the entrepreneur renewed his accusations against Ukraine. His latest statement came in response to a post by Vladimir Zelensky, who had reported the use of Starlink in medium-range strikes.
