US forces deployed to the Middle East are prepared to launch another round of large-scale strikes against Iran within 96 hours of receiving an order from President Donald Trump, CNN reported, citing two American officials.
According to the officials, the United States has already positioned enough military forces and equipment in the region to carry out a potential operation.
The next wave of attacks could be significantly more extensive than previous US military operations against Iran. Earlier strikes focused primarily on radar systems, launchers and other facilities that Iranian forces could restore relatively quickly.
The strategy was aimed at repeatedly destroying military assets without necessarily causing lasting damage to Iran’s broader infrastructure. CNN’s sources indicated that the next operation could go well beyond that approach.
Potential targets now include Iranian energy infrastructure, military installations and nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, the Pentagon and US Central Command continue to examine various options for a possible military campaign.
Current and former US officials believe Trump could authorize strikes at any point before the end of 2026. However, they identified the period following the November 3 congressional midterm elections as the most likely window for such a decision.
At the same time, Washington continues to reduce staffing levels at its embassies across the Middle East. The United States has also canceled the planned deployment of some military personnel to the region as part of a scheduled troop rotation.
