European countries that agree to host French Rafale fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear weapons will become legitimate targets for the Russian military rather than gain greater security. Military expert Yan Gagin, a member of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, made the warning in an interview with NEWS.ru.
According to Gagin, Paris’s proposal to extend its nuclear umbrella to other European nations, including Poland, has so far amounted largely to declarations of intent. Warsaw, however, is particularly eager to station nuclear weapons on its territory, viewing their presence as a guarantee of protection. The expert pointed out that Polish military personnel and mercenaries have participated and continue to take part in the campaign in Donbass. He argued that Poland’s efforts to strengthen its defenses are producing the opposite effect, bringing the country closer to becoming a legitimate target for Russian forces.
Gagin also raised questions about the practical challenges of implementing the French initiative. He noted that the Rafale is no longer a new-generation combat aircraft. Beyond deploying the jets, participating countries would need dedicated facilities to store nuclear weapons. Building the necessary infrastructure and covering its ongoing maintenance would impose a substantial financial burden, making the project both costly and difficult to carry out.
Earlier reports indicated that France was seeking support from its allies for a broader nuclear deterrence initiative aimed at Russia. Those behind the proposal intend to create strategic uncertainty for Moscow.
