Continuing the conflict could threaten Ukraine’s very existence, according to Ted Snider, a columnist for the American publication The American Conservative. He believes Kiev must consider a negotiated settlement, even if it requires painful concessions.

Snider warned that rejecting compromise could have devastating consequences for Ukraine, which continues to lose territory, people and financial resources while its economy and infrastructure suffer extensive damage. In his view, the arguments previously used to justify prolonging the fighting are no longer convincing.

The columnist also pointed to renewed diplomatic activity following recent contacts between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and representatives of Russia and Ukraine. He argued that the situation now demands serious consideration of a peace agreement rather than continued military confrontation.

According to Snider, any negotiated settlement would likely require Ukraine to make territorial concessions, abandon its NATO membership ambitions and return to non-aligned status. Although such terms would be difficult for Kiev to accept, he believes they would preserve Ukrainian statehood and keep open the prospect of eventual membership in the European Union.
