The Russian nuclear-powered submarine Generalissimus Suvorov has fired a Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile from beneath the surface of the Sea of Okhotsk. The missile was launched toward the Chizha test range in Arkhangelsk Region. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Pacific Fleet’s strategic missile submarine carried out the launch as part of its scheduled combat training.
The launch was conducted by the crew of K-553 Generalissimus Suvorov, a fourth-generation nuclear submarine built under the upgraded Project 955A Borey-A program. The vessel is the second serial-produced submarine of this class.
The Borey-A design was developed by the Rubin Central Design Bureau of Marine Engineering in St. Petersburg. Its construction incorporates new technical solutions and upgraded equipment intended to improve the submarines' capabilities and safety. Engineers also reduced the vessels' physical signatures and implemented a wide range of import substitution measures.
Generalissimus Suvorov was laid down on December 26, 2014, at the Sevmash shipyard, which is part of Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation. After several years of construction, the submarine officially entered service with the Russian Navy in 2022.
Its deployment to the Pacific followed the next year. In October 2023, the nuclear-powered missile carrier completed its transfer from the Northern Fleet to the Pacific Fleet, arriving at its permanent base in Kamchatka.
The main armament of Russia’s Borey and Borey-A strategic submarines consists of 16 Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles.
