Russia’s state arms exporter Rosoboronexport has delivered the first batch of 12 Su-35 multirole fighter jets to the Ethiopian Air Force, according to company CEO Alexander Mikheev. The aircraft belong to the 4++ generation of Russian combat aviation.
Mikheev explained that Ethiopia has operated Sukhoi aircraft for many years, giving its pilots and technical personnel extensive experience with Russian-made jets. This familiarity is expected to make the transition to the Su-35 easier.
Speaking to the Vesti news service, the Rosoboronexport chief said the Su-35 had demonstrated its capabilities during Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, including operations involving air defense systems and electronic warfare. He argued that the fighter meets the Ethiopian military’s current operational needs.
Beyond supplying the aircraft, Russia will provide specialized training for Ethiopian pilots, engineers and maintenance personnel. The program will cover the operation and servicing of the new fighters.
Ethiopia already has an aviation maintenance facility and service center experienced in supporting Su-27 aircraft and other aviation equipment. According to Mikheev, both sides have agreed on a comprehensive support program covering the Su-35’s warranty period and its subsequent operational life.
