Russian Aerospace Forces combat helicopters can now carry out missions of near-strategic significance thanks to the introduction of the compact Banderol and Dan-T cruise missiles, according to military expert Dmitry Boltenkov.

Boltenkov said the new weapons have significantly expanded the capabilities of Russian military helicopters. Both missiles reportedly cost several times less than Kh-101 cruise missiles and weapons from the Kalibr family, while carrying a 150-kilogram warhead. The Banderol also has an estimated range of approximately 500 kilometers.

The expert emphasized that the ability to launch Banderol missiles from combat helicopters marks a major shift in the role of army aviation. Aircraft previously associated primarily with battlefield operations can now undertake missions approaching strategic significance.

Boltenkov also identified a key advantage helicopters hold over strategic missile carriers: their ability to take off from various unprepared sites. This flexibility allows them to launch weapons with an element of surprise.

By contrast, he argued, preparations for the deployment and takeoff of strategic missile carriers are almost impossible to conceal. This distinction makes helicopters particularly valuable as platforms for the new cruise missiles.

In October, photographs emerged showing a Russian Mi-8AMTSh-VN Sapsan helicopter fitted with new side-mounted pylons. Experts suggested that the additional mounting points could be intended to carry Banderol or Dan-T cruise missiles.
