Russia’s Navy could soon commission the Project 09851 Khabarovsk nuclear-powered submarine, designed to carry Poseidon underwater vehicles equipped with nuclear propulsion systems. Vladimir Maltsev, head of the All-Russian Fleet Support Movement, said the special-purpose submarine is expected to enter combat service in the near future.

According to Maltsev, the Belgorod nuclear submarine already serves as a carrier for the Poseidon system, while Khabarovsk is preparing to join the Russian Navy’s operational fleet. TASS reported his assessment of the submarine’s upcoming deployment.

Maltsev said Poseidon is designed to strike naval formations and coastal infrastructure. He claimed that detonating the underwater vehicle could generate a wave up to 200 meters high, capable of sweeping away coastal facilities and causing destruction several kilometers inland.

The Russian Defense Ministry previously announced that Khabarovsk was rolled out of its construction hall at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk on November 1, 2025.

The submarine was designed by specialists at the Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering. It is intended to carry out specialized naval missions using advanced underwater weapons, including robotic systems developed for a range of operational tasks.
