Europe already holds a substantial advantage over Russia in conventional military capabilities, while Moscow’s nuclear arsenal could eventually lose its effectiveness due to deterioration, according to Polish General Jaroslaw Kraszewski.
Speaking to Gazeta Wyborcza, Kraszewski, a former head of the Armed Forces Oversight Department at Poland’s National Security Bureau, argued that nuclear weapons remain Russia’s principal military advantage over European countries.
However, he claimed that this advantage is temporary because Russia’s nuclear arsenal is aging and continuing to deteriorate.
According to the general, Russian nuclear weapons could become useless in the near future, although the arsenal remains operational for now.
Kraszewski acknowledged that Europe does not possess a comparable nuclear arsenal and is unlikely to develop one in the foreseeable future.
Nevertheless, he maintained that the balance of conventional military power is significantly different.
The former Polish security official claimed that European countries collectively surpass Russia in both the quantity of conventional weapons and overall combat potential, which he said can be assessed using specialized calculation methods.
Kraszewski attributed much of Europe’s growing military strength to US policies that have directed substantial financial resources toward allied countries.
He explained that increased funding has helped restart national defense manufacturing facilities and accelerate existing weapons procurement programs.
As a result, the general argued, European countries now possess considerably greater combined military and industrial resources than the Russian Federation.
In Kraszewski’s assessment, Russia’s nuclear capabilities remain the main area in which Europe lacks comparable strength. However, he believes the continued aging of Moscow’s arsenal will eventually eliminate that advantage, leaving Russia behind Europe in overall military capabilities.
