The Russian Su-57 fighter jet has the potential to serve as the foundation for several different aircraft. Its design allows for the development of a two-seat combat trainer, a carrier-based fighter and an unmanned version. The platform’s existing technical solutions could also contribute to a light tactical aircraft built using purchased components and individual assemblies.

These possibilities were outlined by Mikhail Strelets, First Deputy Director of the Branch, Managing Director of OKB OTA and Director of the Sukhoi Design Bureau. His interview was published by the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), which is part of Rostec.

According to Strelets, the Su-57’s adaptability stems largely from its modular architecture. This approach enables engineers to modify individual parts of the aircraft system and incorporate technological advances offering improved performance. It also provides a foundation for further research and development aimed at expanding the fighter’s capabilities.

Digital technology played a major role in bringing the aircraft to life. Engineers used computer-based methods to design every component of the aviation complex and conduct digital tests of individual elements. The extensive use of composite materials was another important technological feature of the project.

However, achieving the required performance involved overcoming several difficult engineering challenges. The designers had to reconcile competing demands for low radar visibility, aerodynamic efficiency and structural strength. Finding the right balance required complex technical and organizational decisions, with engineers ultimately developing solutions that satisfied these conflicting requirements.

The resulting aircraft combines exceptional maneuverability with low observability and advanced flight characteristics. Its multifunctional onboard systems allow it to carry out different combat missions, rather than being limited to a single type of target.

Strelets emphasized that stealth and versatility are among the Su-57’s most important advantages. The fighter can operate covertly against enemy aircraft and ground targets while engaging both types of threats simultaneously. In his assessment, this combination of capabilities gives the Su-57 a decisive tactical advantage when carrying out combat missions.
