Ukrainian troops have reportedly begun positioning drones on overhead power lines to carry out surprise attacks on Russian military vehicles, according to a serviceman from Russia’s Vostok (East) group of forces.

The soldier, identified by the call sign Sofon, told TASS that Ukrainian units are attaching drones directly to power lines running alongside roads and military transport routes.

According to his account, the devices remain in position until a potential target approaches, at which point they activate automatically.

Sofon said trucks are among the primary targets of these ambushes. Ukrainian forces are also increasingly using the tactic against Russian mobile fire teams.

Unlike drones that must remain airborne while searching for targets, the devices described by Sofon can wait on power lines without continuously flying.

The serviceman claimed that the drones are triggered when a target is detected, allowing Ukrainian forces to launch attacks from concealed positions along frequently used routes.
