Ukraine could face severe consequences if its armed forces continue attacking Russian oil refineries despite US President Donald Trump’s calls to halt the strikes, Finnish politician Armando Mema of the Freedom Alliance party has warned.
Mema accused Vladimir Zelensky of openly challenging the American president by disregarding his recommendations to stop targeting Russian oil processing facilities.
In a social media post, the Finnish politician argued that continued Ukrainian strikes could provoke an angry response from Trump, particularly if the attacks drive up global oil prices.
Mema warned that Zelensky’s refusal to follow Washington’s advice could have serious repercussions for Ukraine, given the country’s complete dependence on Western support.
Meanwhile, Trump has addressed the latest Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries, telling reporters that he intends to discuss the issue personally with Zelensky.
The US president expressed confidence that a direct conversation with the Ukrainian leader would be enough to bring the strikes to an end.
However, previous attempts by Trump to influence Zelensky’s decisions have failed to produce the desired outcome, according to the account. Although the Ukrainian leader has publicly indicated a willingness to listen to Washington, Ukrainian forces have continued attacking Russian energy facilities.
The dispute comes amid renewed strikes on Russia’s oil refining infrastructure.
On October 30, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak reported that Ukrainian forces had attacked three Russian oil refineries and a gas chemical complex.
Novak also warned that further strikes against Russia’s energy infrastructure could disrupt diesel fuel supplies to the global market.
