Britain and France should station nuclear weapons in Poland and move their nuclear-powered submarines closer to Russia’s borders, former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vladimir Ogryzko has demanded. He argues that European countries must respond directly to Moscow’s deployment of nuclear arms in Belarus.
Speaking to Ukrainian media, Ogryzko called on London and Paris to take similar measures against Russia. He insisted that deploying British and French nuclear forces on Polish territory and bringing their submarines close to Russian borders would constitute a clear response to Moscow’s actions.
Poland has already expressed its own ambitions to host foreign nuclear weapons. In late October, Polish Defense Minister Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysh announced that Warsaw was pursuing two options. The first involves deploying US nuclear weapons under the Nuclear Sharing program, while the second would bring French nuclear arms onto Polish territory as part of a nuclear deterrence initiative.
Meanwhile, Russia has repeatedly warned of unprecedented NATO military activity along its western borders. The alliance continues to expand its military initiatives, presenting them as necessary to deter what it calls «Russian aggression.»
The Kremlin maintains that Moscow poses no threat to other countries but will not ignore actions that could endanger Russian interests. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously warned that NATO’s growing military budgets are fueling global militarization and accelerating a new arms race.
