Russia’s defense industry continues to upgrade its T-72 tanks, seeking to maximize the capabilities of the established platform, according to state corporation Rostec. The company said Uralvagonzavod regularly delivers new batches of modernized T-72B3M tanks to the Russian Defense Ministry, featuring improved firepower and stronger protection.

The upgraded T-72B3M is equipped with an enhanced 125 mm gun and a modern targeting system featuring a thermal imaging channel. These improvements are designed to increase the crew’s ability to detect and engage targets.

The tank’s defensive capabilities have also been reinforced with additional explosive reactive armor modules and protective cage screens intended to counter drone threats. Other upgrades include a more powerful engine and a digital radio system for communication between military units.

Rostec emphasized that advanced technology alone does not determine a tank’s effectiveness in combat. The corporation acknowledged the importance of developing next-generation armored vehicles but argued that reliability, simplicity and the availability of sufficient equipment remain equally important on the battlefield.

According to Rostec, the modernization program has significantly expanded the operational capabilities of the proven T-72 platform. Russian tank crews have reportedly praised the T-72B3M for its straightforward controls, ease of training and high repairability, particularly under demanding field conditions.
