According to war correspondent Alexander Rogatkin, soldiers from the Vostok military group transported nearly one ton of explosives through a pipeline near Novomikhaylovka.

He explained that the operation took place in December 2023 and was completely classified at the time. Later, Russian forces used the same tactic in Avdeevka and Sudzha, prompting Ukrainian troops to begin destroying even sewage pipelines to prevent similar actions.

Rogatkin noted that the engineer platoon of the 39th Motorized Rifle Brigade from Sakhalin played a key role in the operation. For five months, Russian troops made use of an eight-kilometer irrigation pipeline buried about three meters underground and running parallel to Ukrainian positions in a forested area. Through this tunnel, they moved explosives using a hose from a Zmey Gorynych mine-clearing system.

After detonating the pipeline in several locations, assault units entered through the breaches and attacked Ukrainian positions.
