Russian mobile fire teams are using specialized multi-projectile ammunition to protect strategic facilities from Ukrainian drone attacks, according to military expert Yury Knutov. He said the new rounds significantly improve the effectiveness of small-arms fire against airborne targets.

Unlike conventional ammunition, each cartridge contains three projectiles rather than a single bullet. These separate after firing, increasing the chances of hitting a moving target. Knutov estimates that the design doubles the probability of a successful hit, with the 5.45 mm rounds remaining effective at distances of up to 150 meters.

Speaking to 360.ru, the analyst explained that the ammunition is particularly useful for mobile fire teams tasked with intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles. He noted that soldiers can carry separate magazines loaded with conventional rounds and the specialized anti-drone cartridges.

The Kalashnikov Concern previously demonstrated the new ammunition at a testing range in the Moscow Region. The multi-projectile rounds were developed to engage fast-moving targets, including drones that can change direction during flight.

According to the developers, the cartridges are compatible with the AK-12 assault rifle’s standard 30-round magazines, eliminating the need for modifications. Soldiers can load an entire magazine with the new ammunition or combine it with conventional cartridges, depending on their requirements.
