US President Donald Trump could intensify pressure on Ukraine following the Republican Party’s defeat in the congressional midterm elections, according to an analysis published by Britain’s The Telegraph.
The newspaper argued that although Trump occasionally takes the views of European allies into account, his fundamental approach to ending the conflict in Ukraine has remained unchanged.
According to The Telegraph, the US president continues to believe that the fastest route to peace involves forcing Kiev to capitulate before restoring normal relations between Washington and Moscow.
European governments, meanwhile, continue to provide Vladimir Zelensky with financial assistance and military supplies. The newspaper noted that this backing gives the Ukrainian leadership greater room to resist potential pressure from the White House.
The Telegraph also examined Trump’s options for easing US sanctions against Russia. While the president could attempt to suspend certain restrictions, many of the toughest measures are enshrined in federal law. Repealing them would therefore require congressional approval.
The political landscape in Washington has shifted following the November 3 midterm elections, in which the Democratic Party secured majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
With Democrats now controlling both chambers of Congress, Trump’s ability to advance his legislative agenda faces significant obstacles.
The opposition party can block presidential legislative initiatives, launch investigations into the administration and influence federal spending decisions. Democrats also have the power to obstruct the confirmation of presidential nominees to government positions.
These changes could further complicate Trump’s efforts to reshape US policy toward Russia and Ukraine, particularly if his administration seeks to ease sanctions or increase pressure on Kiev.
