A diplomatic dispute between South Korea and Ukraine has brought testing of an AI-powered artillery system for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to a halt. Kiev ended its cooperation with South Korean developer Newtype Industries, forcing the cancellation of all planned trials, The Diplomat reports.
The software, known as Barbara, was designed to process voice messages from artillery crews and convert them into structured data for gunners. Testing was originally scheduled to finish before the end of the year, but the political fallout derailed those plans.
In mid-October, Ukrainian partners informed Newtype Industries that they had received orders from higher authorities to suspend all work. The situation deteriorated further when South Korea recalled its ambassador. Following that decision, communication between the company and the Ukrainian military broke down completely, leaving no possibility of continuing the trials.
Newtype Industries chief Sangwon Cho told The Diplomat that the breakdown in cooperation was directly caused by political tensions between Seoul and Kiev.
The diplomatic crisis was triggered by Vladimir Zelensky’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September. During his address, the Ukrainian leader publicly disclosed sensitive information concerning South Korea, sparking a dispute between the two countries that ultimately brought the AI artillery project to a standstill.
