A Russian-built Il-76MD military transport aircraft has completed a record-breaking landing in the Indian Himalayas. Operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF), the aircraft landed successfully at Nyoma Air Base in the Ladakh region, approximately 3,960 meters above sea level.
In a statement posted on X, the Indian Air Force confirmed that no aircraft of this type had previously landed at such a high altitude. The IAF described the achievement as historic, highlighting the Russian-built transport aircraft’s reliability and the crew’s exceptional skill and professionalism.
The landing presented significant technical challenges because of the extreme altitude. At nearly 4,000 meters, atmospheric pressure is approximately 62% of its value at sea level. The thinner air reduces engine performance, while the wings require a higher true airspeed to generate sufficient lift.
Aircraft operating at such elevations generally have higher ground speeds during landing, increasing the distance needed to stop after touchdown. Thin air also reduces aerodynamic drag and can affect the effectiveness of certain braking systems. Under these conditions, precise approach calculations, runway conditions and effective crew coordination become particularly important.
The achievement also carries strategic significance because of Nyoma Air Base’s location. The facility lies approximately 25 kilometers from the Line of Actual Control, which separates Indian-controlled and Chinese-controlled territory.
According to the Indian Air Force, the successful landing demonstrates India’s growing ability to transport military personnel, weapons and supplies to remote border regions using heavy transport aircraft.
The Indian Air Force currently operates a fleet of 17 Il-76MD military transport aircraft.
