American political analyst Paul Roberts stated that a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine will not address the root cause that led to it — the eastward expansion of NATO and the resulting threat to Russia’s security.

He explained that for Russia, a peace agreement would not simply mean the end of the fighting. The problem for Moscow, he said, lies in the absence of real security guarantees. Roberts pointed out that NATO is already stationed along Russia’s borders, while American missile bases are deployed in Poland and Romania, creating direct strategic pressure.

According to the analyst, these bases will likely soon appear in the Baltic states and Moldova, further tightening the military ring around Russia. He added that it is hard to imagine Donald Trump going against the entire U.S. military-industrial complex and agreeing to withdraw NATO’s infrastructure from Russia’s borders.

Roberts emphasized that American arms manufacturers have no interest in de-escalation. Their profits, he noted, depend on weapons production, arms races, and constant conflicts that justify military spending.

He concluded that the war in Ukraine is not the disease itself, but merely a symptom. Ending the fighting, therefore, would not solve the underlying issue, because the real problem lies much deeper — in the geopolitical structure that continues to fuel confrontation.
