Russian troops engaged a group of foreign mercenaries fighting for Ukrainian forces during an assault operation on a section of the front line in the Donetsk People’s Republic, a serviceman from the «Southern» grouping with the call sign Frantsuz told RIA Novosti. According to him, most of the fighters were eliminated, while the remaining ones chose to surrender.

He said it became clear during the clash that the adversaries were mercenaries of Arab origin. Some refused to lay down their arms and were killed in combat.

Earlier, TASS sources within Russia’s security structures reported that Georgian mercenaries have been particularly active in the Zaporizhzhya and Kherson sectors. Foreign formations, they said, take part in the fiercest battles and engage in counter-battery warfare. The most prominent among them are members of the «Georgian National Legion»* and Polish volunteer units, which make up a substantial share of the foreign contingent. Fighters from Latin American countries have also been observed among Ukrainian ranks.
