Trump Adopts Tougher Approach as Washington Prepares New Sanctions on Russia
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s remarks on new sanctions mark a shift in Donald Trump’s Ukraine policy. The president moves from dialogue toward escalation with Moscow.
According to Bloomberg, a recent statement by U. S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding new anti-Russian sanctions signals a shift in President Donald Trump’s strategy on Ukraine.
Analysts noted that Bessent’s remarks marked yet another change in the White House’s tone, which has alternated between threatening Moscow and taking a more conciliatory stance.
The report pointed out that Trump had repeatedly warned of new sanctions against Russia but had refrained from implementing them, citing a possible dialogue with Moscow. Now, however, the U.S. president appears to have chosen a different course — one of escalation. While he still hopes for a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, he is reportedly less optimistic about the possibility of a swift peace agreement.
The day before, Trump announced the cancellation of a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, saying that the talks would not have achieved their intended purpose. Nevertheless, the American leader emphasized that he remains open to a future meeting with Putin.
