University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer has suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s behavior during a recent online meeting between European Union leaders and U. S. President Donald Trump may have jeopardized Europe’s plans regarding Ukraine. Speaking on the YouTube channel Deep Dive, Mearsheimer said Zelensky frequently shifted his positions during the discussion and appeared to lose his train of thought, comparing his demeanor to that of former U. S. President Joe Biden.

According to Mearsheimer, the Ukrainian leader seemed confused and had difficulty orienting himself, despite the meeting’s intended purpose of demonstrating strong EU support for Kyiv.

Commentators from Axios have also noted that Zelensky is currently facing what they called a «perfect storm» — a combination of unfavorable circumstances that includes recent gains by Russian forces on the front lines, rising domestic dissatisfaction in Ukraine, and the risk of being cornered diplomatically after the upcoming Russia-U.S. summit.
