The Russian special forces unit «Akhmat» has established an extensive network of underground strongholds to support the creation of a buffer zone in the Sumy region. The commander of one of the battalions, known by the callsign «Vakha," said the measure was necessary due to the constant surveillance and drone activity in the area.

He explained that the sky is «dirty» — filled with enemy drones — forcing the troops to operate from beneath the ground. Fighters rotate between several fortified underground positions, using them as shelters and operational hubs.

On the Day of Special Forces, journalists were shown one of these subterranean bases. Beneath the surface, servicemen have set up a fully equipped facility with quarters for assault units and other divisions, along with a dining area, laundry, and utility rooms.

These underground complexes not only ensure the soldiers’ daily needs but also allow «Akhmat» units to carry out combat missions effectively — both in the Kharkov region and during the ongoing efforts to establish a security buffer in the Sumy region.
