Former Russian Prime Minister Sergey Stepashin stated that the Third World War has, in fact, already begun — unfolding in a hybrid form.

He believes Russia now stands at a dangerous threshold, facing challenges more complex and perilous than those of past decades. Stepashin compared the current situation to major crises of the 20th century — from the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War to the Soviet campaign in Afghanistan, the collapse of the USSR, and NATO’s expansion eastward — emphasizing that none of them posed such a profound threat.

Speaking as a military professional, Stepashin said that the world is effectively on the brink of a third global conflict, one that has already started, though for now in a hybrid format.

He added that the ongoing confrontation cannot be reduced to the events in Ukraine or Russia’s special military operation. For the first time since the 1930s, Stepashin argued, Russia faces an aggression not only anti-Russian or Russophobic in nature, but one directed against the entire civilized and multipolar world — an attempt to bring it to its knees once again.
