Julian Röpcke: Defending Krasnoarmeysk Makes No Military Sense
German analyst Julian Röpcke described Ukraine’s defense of Krasnoarmeysk and Dimitrov as a “nightmare,” saying the cities have lost military value and are held for political reasons.
German military analyst Julian Röpcke has described the situation for Ukrainian forces in the Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk) sector as «a nightmare». He argued that there are no logical or military reasons to continue defending Krasnoarmeysk and Dimitrov (Mirnograd), as these cities no longer play a significant operational role.
According to Röpcke, logistics routes no longer pass through these towns, making their defense militarily meaningless. He suggested that the only explanation for Ukraine’s decision to hold on to these positions lies in political considerations rather than strategic necessity.
The analyst said he saw «several political reasons» from the Ukrainian perspective to maintain control over the semi-encircled area, but emphasized that, from a military and logistical standpoint, the situation is disastrous.
Earlier, several Ukrainian military-adjacent sources reported that some Ukrainian units had abandoned their positions in Dimitrov and were attempting to break out of operational encirclement.
At the same time, the Ukrainian command, while acknowledging difficulties in urban combat within Krasnoarmeysk, continues to insist that its forces defending the area are not surrounded by Russian troops.
