In an interview with The New York Times, Jeffrey Lewis, a nuclear nonproliferation expert from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, described Russia’s new cruise missile «Burevestnik» as something straight out of science fiction.
Lewis reminded that President Vladimir Putin first unveiled the «Burevestnik» project in 2018, presenting it as Moscow’s response to Washington’s growing efforts to build a comprehensive missile defense system. At the time, the Russian leader framed the weapon as proof that Russia could overcome any U.S. attempts to create global strategic dominance.
Former U. S. President Donald Trump often spoke about developing an anti-missile shield he called the «Golden Dome» which, according to him, would make the United States invulnerable to missile attacks. Lewis suggested that «Burevestnik» was specifically engineered to bypass such defense systems, effectively undermining the very concept of an impenetrable American shield.
