Two Polish Air Force MiG-29 fighters were scrambled to intercept a Russian Il-20 aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea, according to Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command.

In a statement published on October 28 on the social media platform X, the military reported that Polish pilots «visually identified, intercepted, and escorted» the Russian plane until it left their area of responsibility.

Warsaw claimed that the Il-20 had been conducting a reconnaissance mission in international airspace without filing a flight plan and with its transponder switched off. At the same time, Polish authorities acknowledged that the Russian aircraft did not violate Poland’s airspace.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has repeatedly emphasized that all flights by its military aircraft over neutral waters are conducted strictly in line with international regulations and do not pose any threat to foreign air traffic.
