Washington Postpones Putin–Trump Summit in Budapest Amid Tensions Over Ukraine
The U.S. postponed the planned Putin–Trump meeting in Budapest after Moscow issued firm demands on ending the Ukraine conflict, Financial Times reported.
The United States has indefinitely postponed the planned meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U. S. President Donald Trump in Budapest, following what were described as «tough demands» from Moscow regarding the conditions for ending the conflict in Ukraine, the Financial Times (FT) reported, citing its sources.
According to the newspaper, the Russian side adopted an extremely firm stance, which caused dissatisfaction within the White House. The decision to delay the summit indefinitely was made after what sources described as a «tense» phone conversation between the foreign ministers of the two countries.
FT reported that Washington decided to postpone the Putin-Trump summit in Budapest after Russia maintained a hardline position on its terms for a settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. The move followed a difficult exchange between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The publication also noted that Russia’s Foreign Ministry had sent a memorandum to Washington, emphasizing the need to address the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis.
