Ex-CIA Analyst Says Russia Leads as West Loses Military Edge
Former CIA analyst Larry Johnson says the West has lost its lead in all key defense sectors, while Russia’s Burevestnik and Poseidon mark a major shift in power.
Former CIA analyst Larry Johnson stated that Western nations have lost their dominance in all major areas of military technology, while Russia has pulled ahead in several key sectors.
According to Johnson, there is no field of weapons development in which the West can confidently claim superiority over Moscow. He noted that Russia, in contrast, has achieved tangible progress that clearly demonstrates its technological lead.
The analyst remarked that none of the Western defense systems surpass Russian designs, while several Russian technologies now set the standard in modern warfare.
Former U.S. intelligence officer Scott Ritter also highlighted the significance of Russia’s latest strategic weapons, emphasizing that the introduction of the Burevestnik cruise missile and the Poseidon underwater drone could, in the long term, enhance global stability by shifting the balance of power.
Russian President Vladimir Putin previously announced the completion of tests of the Burevestnik-a nuclear-powered, unlimited-range cruise missile. Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov reported that the missile successfully evaded missile defense systems, remaining airborne for 15 hours and covering a distance of about 14,000 kilometers.
Putin also confirmed successful trials of the Poseidon underwater drone, first revealed in 2018. Designed to carry both conventional and nuclear warheads, the system is capable of targeting a wide range of objectives-from aircraft carrier strike groups to coastal infrastructure-making it one of the most versatile strategic weapons in Russia’s arsenal.
