Berlin to Boost Ukraine Support by €3 Billion Amid Financial Strain
Despite a severe budget crunch, Germany is preparing to raise aid to Ukraine by €3 billion in 2026, expanding both military and civilian support programs, Handelsblatt reports.
Germany plans to expand its financial support for Ukraine by an additional €3 billion in 2026, despite the country’s ongoing budget difficulties. The information was reported by Handelsblatt, citing sources within the government and ruling coalition.
According to the outlet, the extra funding will be provided as part of an initiative aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities — a key mechanism through which Berlin has been assisting Kyiv since the start of the Russian special military operation in February 2022. The package includes both military and civilian projects.
The initial draft of Germany’s 2026 federal budget allocated €8.5 billion for Ukraine-related assistance. However, government sources said the Chancellery, Finance Ministry, and Defense Ministry are now discussing a potential increase to around €11.5 billion. While final figures have yet to be approved, all sides reportedly agree on the necessity of expanding support.
At the same time, Berlin maintains its refusal to supply Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine. The report stresses that the German government’s stance on this issue remains unchanged — the delivery of such weapon systems is not under consideration.
