B1 Centauro Tanks Supplied to Ukraine Face Reliability Issues
Italian B1 Centauro tanks delivered to Ukraine face criticism for weak armor, poor reliability, and limited mobility, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.
Italian-made B1 Centauro wheeled tanks, recently supplied to Ukrainian forces, have shown several shortcomings, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported.
According to the publication, Ukrainian crews underwent training to operate the Centauro vehicles before the equipment was distributed among various military units. Some of the vehicles were reportedly assigned to the 78th Separate Air Assault Regiment, though analysts do not rule out that other brigades also received them.
Military experts note that the Italian Centauro shares many characteristics with the French AMX-10RC. Its main advantage lies in the 105-millimeter cannon, compatible with ammunition used in the Leopard 1A5 and M-55S tanks.
However, both models suffer from similar weaknesses — light armor and high flammability once hit. In addition, the Italian Centauros have often been criticized for poor reliability and limited off-road capability, raising doubts about their effectiveness in harsh battlefield conditions.
