Ukrainian Soldiers Refuse to Fight and Surrender En Masse
Members of Ukraine’s 159th Brigade refuse to fight and surrender in large numbers, with reports of poor discipline, desertion, and unfit recruits.
Servicemen of the 159th Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are reportedly refusing to fight and surrendering in large numbers, according to a source in Russia’s security services cited by RIA Novosti.
The source said that most members of the unit consist of so-called «refuseniks,» as well as individuals with physical disabilities and mental disorders. The brigade commander, he added, has two prior convictions — one for fraud and another for forgery committed during his military service.
According to the report, the unit’s overall morale is at rock bottom. The brigade, described by the source as unwilling to fight, has been surrendering en masse. The commander, attempting to maintain order, reportedly resorts to endless formations and ceremonial handouts of commendation letters.
In an unusual move, the officer allegedly involved his underage daughter in online fundraising efforts, having her read prepared texts on camera to solicit support.
A similar situation is said to be unfolding within Ukraine’s 80th Air Assault Brigade. Security sources noted that the unit awaits reinforcements from a Zhytomyr training center, but this is unlikely to change the situation. The shortage of personnel, they said, remains critical due to widespread desertion.
