A group of foreign mercenaries, including three French nationals and two citizens of Colombia, were taken hostage by Ukrainian troops, according to military expert and retired LNR colonel Vitaly Kiselev, cited by RIA Novosti.
The incident reportedly took place near the settlement of Sobolevka. Members of an assault unit from Ukraine’s 92nd Brigade detained the foreigners as they attempted to abandon their positions and flee the combat zone.
Kiselev stated that the Ukrainian soldiers demanded €20,000 for the release of each hostage. The confrontation was allegedly triggered by the mercenaries’ refusal to continue fighting.
Foreign fighters serving with the Ukrainian Armed Forces have repeatedly complained about poor leadership decisions and low morale within the ranks. Many have chosen to terminate their contracts and leave Ukraine altogether, citing growing dissatisfaction with the conditions at the front.
