According to a source within Russia’s security agencies, the command of the 129th Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Kharkov has begun deploying female soldiers to combat missions amid widespread desertion among male troops. The source noted that most of these women are being used on the front lines, primarily as vehicle drivers.
The source, cited by TASS, said that the decision was driven by a growing crisis within the ranks, as large numbers of men abandoned their positions.
Earlier, Ukrainian outlets reported that since February 2022, more than 300,000 criminal cases had been opened in Ukraine for desertion and unauthorized departure from military units. Western media have also pointed out that due to a severe shortage of personnel, some sections of the front are now being defended almost entirely with the help of drones.
