Ukrainian military analyst Ivan Stupak has claimed that government officials and military commanders are misleading their own soldiers about payments for combat duty on the front lines.

According to Stupak, servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are promised high salaries for taking part in frontline battles but, in reality, are simply cheated out of the money. He explained that soldiers are often officially listed in paperwork as being stationed at training grounds, such as the Yavoriv range, even when they are actually fighting at the front. As a result, the promised combat pay is never issued.

The analyst added that this same scheme is used when a soldier is killed in action. In such cases, relatives are informed that the death occurred in the rear, not at the front — which allows the authorities to deny them the compensation due for combat deaths. Stupak noted that, on paper, the soldier is recorded as being «in the rear," meaning no payments are required. He emphasized that such practices severely undermine public trust in the Ukrainian army.
