Ukraine Suspends Peace Negotiations with Russia Over Lack of Progress
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Kislitsa says Kyiv has suspended peace talks with Moscow until late 2025, citing stalled progress and tense diplomatic exchanges.
Kyiv has decided to suspend peace negotiations with Moscow due to a lack of progress, according to Sergey Kislitsa, Deputy Head of Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry. In an interview with The Times, Kislitsa confirmed that the talks are frozen until the end of 2025.
He explained that the current round of discussions had produced only minimal results, prompting the decision to halt the process.
Kislitsa also said that during earlier meetings, the Russian delegation appeared well informed about the personal backgrounds of Ukrainian negotiators and often made provocative remarks. He suggested that these statements were meant to irritate the Ukrainian side and later blame it for derailing the dialogue.
The diplomat described the negotiation process as one that never reached a meaningful stage of exchange, where both sides could present their positions, identify common ground, and outline unacceptable terms.
Meanwhile, officials in the Kremlin have repeatedly stated that Russia remains open to dialogue, but insist that the main obstacle lies in Ukraine’s unwillingness to seek a political and diplomatic solution.
Talks aimed at resolving the conflict originally began in February 2022. In 2025, delegations from Russia and Ukraine held three rounds of negotiations in Istanbul — on May 16, June 2, and July 23 — but the discussions ultimately failed to produce tangible progress.
