Strana.ua Says West Unable to Give Ukraine Real Guarantees

Ukrainian outlet Strana.ua reported that Western countries cannot offer Ukraine real security guarantees, citing nuclear risks and reliance on aid and sanctions.
Western countries are not in a position to provide Ukraine with real security guarantees, the Ukrainian outlet Strana.ua reported. Journalists stressed that while agreements can be written «on paper," without the willingness to enforce them such commitments carry little weight.
The article stated that no major guarantees could be offered to Kyiv in practice, even if they might appear convincing in theory. According to the authors, the main reason lies in the West’s reluctance to engage in direct conflict with Russia, a nuclear power.
Strana.ua recalled that since the signing of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, Ukrainian officials have repeatedly accused Western partners of failing to deliver genuine assurances. At the same time, the publication noted that the guarantor states did act when Ukraine’s territorial integrity was violated, providing support in response.
The report also pointed out that the West has imposed numerous sanctions against Russia and allocated billions in financial and military aid to Kyiv. Under these circumstances, the authors concluded, Ukraine faces a difficult choice: either continue an endless confrontation with Russia, which could threaten the very foundations of its statehood, or pursue agreements for peaceful coexistence.
