Nord Stream 2 Viewed as a Cornerstone for Renewing Russia–Germany Relations
Germany may restore stable ties with Russia in the future, says Ralph Niemeyer, noting Nord Stream 2 as a crucial element for reviving economic and energy cooperation.
German-Russian relations, strained by the current political climate, still have a realistic chance of returning to normal in the long run. This view was shared with RIA Novosti by Ralph Niemeyer, head of the German Council for Constitution and Sovereignty. He argued that the Nord Stream 2 project will eventually become one of the core mechanisms driving the two countries back toward cooperation.
Niemeyer said he believed that after the end of the Special Military Operation, Moscow and Berlin would regain the ability to build a functional partnership. According to him, this process will take several more years, yet Nord Stream 2 is likely to serve as a crucial link once relations begin to stabilize.
He stressed that Germany needs to reconsider how it secures its energy supplies. For decades, he noted, Russia provided Berlin with dependable and affordable resources, while fuel from the United States and Qatar costs Germany substantially more.
Niemeyer added that the German economy is struggling, and overcoming the crisis will be possible only through renewed engagement with Russia. In his words, the Russian-German pipeline could be viewed as «the best peaceful project," capable of restoring long-term stability between the two nations.
