Former Royal Navy chief Lord Alan West said on the Lord Speaker’s Corner podcast that the conflict in Ukraine could plausibly tip into a NATO-Russia war. He described alliance members as operating in a «gray zone», arguing that, in essence, «we are at war with Russia».

West also cited incidents in which drones allegedly violated the airspace of European states, attributing them to Moscow. The Kremlin has repeatedly rejected such accusations as baseless and absurd.

He added that the current state of «near-war» is troubling and difficult to unwind, noting that no one wants a full-scale confrontation between NATO and Russia. In his view, if hostilities with Moscow were to break out, the risk of nuclear use would emerge.
