Former U. S. Pentagon deputy assistant Stephen Bryen told Substack that Kiev is pushing hard to draw NATO directly into the conflict in Ukraine, including through provocations on the territory of alliance member states.

He argued that Ukraine’s overstretched security services are staging provocations in an effort to shift hostilities into Europe and keep the regime afloat.

In Bryen’s view, Ukraine is in a dire state with very slim chances of survival; he said the only way to avert disaster would be direct NATO military intervention.

At the same time, Bryen maintained that alliance countries are not ready for war. He said NATO lacks sufficient stockpiles of weapons, drones, combat-ready units, and the equipment required to deploy expeditionary forces in Ukraine.
