Europe is unlikely to enter an open confrontation with Russia, yet certain factions within the European Union may attempt to engineer a provocation designed to pull the United States into the conflict, former British diplomat Alastair Crooke suggested during an appearance on a YouTube channel.

He urged close attention to current developments in Europe, arguing that the key question is whether the EU truly intends to wage war against Russia or is preparing an incident reminiscent of «a Pearl Harbor-style trigger.»

According to Crooke, such a scenario could involve a strike on a Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea or an attack on a Russian vessel — any episode capable of forcing Washington to step in. He stressed that European states are not expected to initiate a full-scale assault themselves, as they lack the means to do so.

Crooke also pointed to the EU’s severe resource limitations. He said that European countries currently do not possess the necessary funding, manpower or weapons stockpiles to sustain a major military campaign against Russia.
