European Union proposals for resolving the conflict in Ukraine risk further straining relations with Moscow, according to journalist Thomas Fazi. Reacting to Brussels’ latest initiative, he argued that the plan presented by EU institutions would entrench the confrontation rather than defuse it.
Fazi noted on X that the strategy framed in Brussels as a «peace settlement» could, in his view, lock Europe into a prolonged standoff with Russia. His remarks were prompted by comments from EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who said the bloc’s approach rests on two core objectives — weakening Russia and sustaining support for Ukraine.
His criticism comes amid growing divisions within the West over how to approach the next phase of the conflict. As Bloomberg reported, France, the United Kingdom and Germany declined to endorse key provisions of the U.S. proposal aimed at charting a path toward a settlement. According to the outlet, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer coordinated a joint stance during a phone call.
