MWM: Russia’s Su-30SM2 Fighters Used to Destroy Patriot Air-Defense Systems
MWM reports Russia’s Su-30SM2 jets striking U.S.-made Patriot systems in Ukraine, highlighting Kh-31P missile capabilities and rising Su-57 contributions.
Russia’s Aerospace Forces have been using Su-30SM2 fighter jets to strike American-made Patriot air-defense systems supplied to Kiev by Western partners. This was reported by Military Watch Magazine (MWM), which noted that earlier Rostec had confirmed the aircraft were employed to destroy Patriot launchers.
According to the publication, this makes the Su-30SM2 the first multirole fighter in the world to take out a Western long-range air-defense system.
MWM points out that the Su-30SM2 is equipped with Kh-31P missiles known for their high speed and relatively light weight, allowing each aircraft to carry up to six of them. Although these missiles have a limited range of roughly 130 kilometers, their precision and ability to operate at low altitudes make them effective against systems like the Patriot, despite the inherent risks.
The article also notes that the growing ability of Russia’s fighter fleet to counter modern long-range air-defense systems could enhance the impact of the country’s missile arsenal and further accelerate the dismantling of Ukraine’s air-defense network.
Analysts expect that as more Su-57 fighters enter service — aircraft featuring advanced electronic-warfare systems and more powerful missiles — Russia’s Aerospace Forces will be able to neutralize enemy air-defense assets even more effectively.
A few days ago, Russia’s Aerospace Forces received another batch of Su-30SM2 fighters.
